Vincent and Catherine
Beauty and the Beast is an updated story version of the classic fairytale that has a double focus: The relationship between Vincent (a mythic, noble man-beast) and Catherine Chandler ( a savvy, courageous and very beautiful assistant D.A ) in New-York City, and a secret utopian community of social outcasts, living in there own " world" below the city. It is there that Vincent is Protector for and protected by those who love and accept him. Through an emotional bond connecting them, Vincent is able to sense Catherine's feelings and thoughts, and the dangers her job bring to her, and he becomes her protector above and the man she loves beyond measure.
The series focuses on the developing relationship between these two lovers from different worlds, as well as beautifully fleshing out the underground world of labyrinth tunnels, mystical waterfalls and it's colorful dwellers who have come together to form a secret loving and nurturing familly.
In a "twist" from the original tale however, the "beast" does not transform into society's idea of beauty after gaining Catherine's love. Rather, Vincent's "inner beauty" is allowed to remain the focus of who he is and it is Catherine's former "shallow" self that is the ugliness transformed by Vincent's deep and unwaivering love for her.
